Fans were celebrating the Astros’ World Series win over the Philadelphia Phillies while the winning team paraded down the city streets on Monday. Cruz joined the procession in an uncovered military-style truck on the 2400 block of Smith Street in Houston, waving to fans of the team. At one point, someone in the crowd hurled a beer can at the GOP lawmaker.
While footage showed a bodyguard blocking the object and later speaking into a label mic, the Houston Police Department later revealed that the beer can had actually struck Cruz in the "chest-neck area."
The department noted in a statement that a 33-year-old man, who wasn't identified pending assault charges, was arrested for allegedly throwing the beer can. In a tweet, the HPD said the projectile struck the Republican firebrand in his “chest/neck area” but that he “did not require medical attention.” The post added, “Nearby HPD officers arrested the male without further incident. He was taken to jail and faces assault charges."

The identity of the bodyguard, who wore dark shades and casual attire, was unclear at the time of publication. However, the young gent is rumored to be a part of Atlas Glinn, a Houston-based 'executive protection' firm whose website now features a photo of Cruz flashing a thumbs-up during a parade. The Senator is pictured in a convertible while flanked by two well-built men in suits with signature pins in their lapels.
Cruz has upgraded his security detail considerably following Election Day on November 3, 2020. He is said to have spent an average of $23,000 a month on services provided by Atlas Glinn. “We employ experienced agents to protect individuals, celebrities, high-vis clients, diplomats, government officials, and traveling clients who require added security and logistics,” the company states on its website, boasting that its personnel includes highly-trained "Agents, PPOs (Personal Protection Officers), and Commissioned officers.”
It's worth noting that the Cruz incident comes amid growing political violence in the lead-up to the midterm elections. A Politico-Morning Consult poll published Monday, November 7, found 8 out of 10 Americans were concerned about political violence in the country. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) husband, Paul Pelosi, dominated the headlines in the past few weeks after he was the victim of an apparent home intruder attack last month. Pelosi was reportedly struck with a hammer and suffered severe head injuries from the attack. He was recently released from the hospital after spending a week recuperating.

The latest incident involving Cruz raised an alarm across the political aisle. California Democrat Representative Eric Swalwell condemned the incident saying, "Don’t throw beer or commit violence against someone you politically disagree with. We are a country of voting, not violence.”
Meanwhile, Cruz thanked the Houston and Capitol law enforcement for
their response and mocked the individual who hurled the beer can at him. "I am also thankful that the clown who threw his White Claw had a noodle for an arm," tweeted Cruz.
