Amber McLaughlin
If all goes according to plan
Missouri will soon execute Amber McLaughlin, 49, the first transgender
person under sentence of death in the United States.
Back
in 2003 Ms. McLaughlin murdered a woman she had been dating as a man.
The relationship went sideways and McLaughlin began stalking her,
including hiding out in her work place. She was convicted of knifing
her to death in the parking lot of her work place.
There
have been 1,558 prisoners legally executed in the U. S. in the last 50
years, since the death penalty was reinstated. Only 17 of them have
been women, including one in Missouri.
The
jury found her guilty, but the judge imposed the death sentence.
Missouri is one of only two states in which the judge, rather than the
jury, imposes the death sentence.
The governor has already said he will not intervene in the matter.

She was in fact executed yesterday.
