SHORT AND MEDIUM TERM, THINGS ARE LOOKING UP

By Bob Walsh

Workers discuss their plan for clearing a tree that fell across Second Avenue in Galion late Wednesday afternoon, taking down a power line that supplied residents on the east side of the city.

CalTrans reopened Hwy 99 this morning.  They determined that there was no actual damage to the roadway.  That's good.  The Cosumnes River is still high but is falling.  Only one person in the area died due to the flood activity.  S/he was found drowned in a stalled-out car.  One or two local creeks / sloughs flooded into adjacent ag land and a defunct golf course near the Stockton Airport.  CalTrans had some heavy equipment out to clear a debris dam where it went under Hwy 99 but the only issue was one lane (out of three) being closed after the commute and the rubber-neckers slowing the parade.  Could have been a lot worse.  Rain is supposed to start again this evening and run all week, but not the wind or the deluge that happened on Saturday.  Also I didn't find any bullet holes or fireworks on my roof yesterday.

They are doing the first official snow pack reading today.  Right now they are guesstimating 175% of normal.  They are letting water OUT of Folsom Lake right now to make room for new runoff.

The Placerville water district is asking that their customers SEVERELY restrict their water use.  They have lots of water but most of it has just run thru a burn scar.  It takes more time and more work to clear cloudy water than it does just to get bad bugs out.

There is still widespread power outages in the greater Sacramento area due largely to downed trees taking down power lines.  Sacramento has a lot of very pretty but very old trees and wet and windy weather is rough on them.

It isn't wonderful, but it isn't horrible either.

The snow survey was 177 %. With a bit of luck we will be officially out of the drought come May.

Hwy 99 has always been a potholed asphalt scar and an embarrassment to the state.
