Genesis Escobar was wounded several times in a flurry of gunfire as she tried to rob a car
A pregnant Chicago woman was shot while she was trying to rob somebody in a car, leaving her and her unborn child dead on the street.
Genesis Escobar, 21, was killed after reportedly climbing into somebody's car in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood on Monday afternoon, and then demanding money from them.
Police said gunfire erupted from within the car and from outside the car, leaving Escobar with multiple gunshot wounds.
She was then pitched out of the car into a nearby intersection, where the shooters covered her body in cash and left her.
Escobar was seven months pregnant, and friends said she was looking forward to being a mother, according to News4.
Nearby resident Iris Alvarez said Escobar had come to visit her daughter around 1pm Monday before the incident.
'She texted my daughter and told my daughter: 'Please help me! I'm in trouble!'' Alvarez told News4. 'But my daughter was sleeping.'
It is unclear what situation Escobar was in.
Alvarez said shortly after they heard gunshots and went outside to see what was happening.
Outside they found Escobar lying in the street and gasping for breath.
Police said Escobar was shot in the back, shoulder and hand while she was inside the car.
Witnesses said she was with a group of people when she attempted the car, and that they also fired shots in the altercation.
Everybody involved in the incident fled the scene after Escobar's body was dumped.
Escobar was taken to a nearby hospital, but later died there.
'They threw a bunch of money on top of her,' Alvarez said. 'I don't know if she was into some kind of trouble.'
'I don't care how much trouble you're in,' said Alvarez. 'I feel that for a person to do that to someone, doesn't have a heart.'
Robberies are also up 13 percent, with aggravated battery and burglaries both up 11 percent.
Theft in the windy city is up 31 percent, and vehicle thefts, specifically, have soared up 143 percent.
Homicides and shooting incidents were the only category to see decreases, falling by 18 percent and 8 percent, respectively.
While overall violent crime is up 52 percent from the same time last year, it's up 102 percent when compared to 2021.

She was looking forward to having her baby? If that were the case, she wouldn't be out car jacking folks. Seems like the victims left a powerful message. RIP, little baby.
