TELANGANA, INDIA: A horrifying tragedy unfolded after a group of monkeys caused the death of a three-year-old boy after they allegedly pushed a boulder off a roof, crushing the toddler to death. The harrowing plight occurred in Telangana, India, when a 3-year-old child named, Devunuri Abhinav was playing below the tin roof of his home.
A gang of monkeys had been jumping around, which then caused a large boulder to fall off and onto his head. The toddler's death is the latest among the slew of primate-related fatalities in India, prompting the government of India to take action against menacing primates.
What happened to Devunuri Abhinav?
Devunuri's parents, named locally in Katukuri village in Akkanapet as Rajitha and Srikanth allegedly paid more than Rs 5 lakh ($6,000) for him to undergo lifesaving surgery. The toddler had almost made a full recovery when he was killed by the primates.
The three-year-old's death has led to an uproar over violent monkeys around local villages. Raj Kumar Chahar, a Bharatiya Janata Party MP, voiced his concerns surrounding menacing primates during a government debate. He demanded answers on how much relief should be afforded by the state to victims of monkey attacks. It came after the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change claimed they had no record of the number of people injured or killed due to monkey bites in India.
A slew of money-related fatalities in India
In recent years, there have been scores of deaths related to monkey attacks in the country. A 70-year-old woman was killed by a pack of rampaging monkeys while on her way to the bathroom in southern India. Chataraboina Narsava, who was living with her daughter, was home alone at the time when the aggressive monkeys punched her. Her daughter, who had been away for a wedding, rushed her mother to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
