The Stadler Rail production facility
The formerly great state of
California is about to spend $127 million for six commuter train units
from Swiss company Stadler Rail. The trains will be used for passenger
rail service with plans towards expanding rail service from the central
valley into the bay area. The generators on the trains will be powered
by hydrogen rather than fossil fuel.
Stadler makes traditional rolling stock as well as this sort of niche market intercity train and multiple unit tram equipment.
This
may turn out to be a useful thing. Even if it doesn't work worth a
damn (and there is no reason to think it won't work) it will give some
useful information for further development of hydrogen power for
industrial engines.
