It looks like the bid to recall
the Alameda County CA. District Attorney Pamela Price is going to get on
the ballot. The proponents have turned in about 123,000 signatures.
They need 73,000 valid signatures to get the issue on the ballot.
The
SAFE organization ( Save Alameda For Everyone) has said repeatedly that
it isn't about politics for them, it is about public safety. Ms. Price
is actually functioning very much like a public defender in her role as
the D. A. She was a civil rights attorney before being elected in 2022
with 53% of the vote. She pledged, among other things, to reduce "mass
incarceration." Meaning she doesn't want to lock up criminals. She
also works hard to get reduced sentences for convicted persons under 25,
who she regards as juvenile offenders. The only serious target for her
wrath is cops.
Most of
the funding against her is from the business community in Alameda
County. She doesn't believe that mass retail theft is an issue.
I
had originally thought this would hit the November ballot but I was
wrong. It will be the subject of a special election assuming the
required signatures are valid. My GUESS is that this will make it
harder for Price to win. Most of her constituency on this issue are
convicts who can't or won't vote and who will probably be passed out on
voting day anyway. Most of the people opposed to her are law-abiding
taxpayers with actual addresses to get their blanket mail-out ballots.
