On Monday fast food workers in CA get a government
mandated minimum wage of $20.00 per hour, except if you get your ass
laid off in which case you get $ Zero dollars an hour. A buttload of
fast food operations are cutting back on staff, installing robots, and
otherwise making adjustments because they can not afford to absorb the
increase and do not want to attempt to pass the increase on to
customers. It cost less than $20 per HOUR to operate a fast foot
robot. They don't call in sick, don't need lunch breaks and don't get
vacations. They flip burgers, cook fries and even serve as hostesses
and escort people to their seats in sit-down restaurants. I wonder how
many people actually thought that EVERYBODY was going to get a roughly
20% pay raise? A lot of fast food workers in CA are now unionized. I
wonder how the union will feel when they suddenly have a lot less people
to suck union dues from?
I am a great believer in the concept of "enlightened self-interest." The "enlightened" part of that phrase is important.
