The Winter Solstice occurs this year on December 21 at 1:20 a.m. Pacific Time. This is a time to reflect.
The
Winter Solstice, not the birth of Yeshua ben Yoseph, is the REAL reason
for the season. Early Christians knew they would have a much easier
time converting the peasants if they didn't deprive them of their
holidays. Hercules, Osiris, Mithras, and Attis all filled the bill as a
savior as well as did Jesus. They all had strong followings at one
time but eventually tapered off and died out. They were however similar
in many ways.
Their births
occurred on or around the Winter Solstice. This is symbolic of the
light overtaking the darkness. They were born in humble surroundings.
Typically caves, though stables would do the job. They were usually
either first sons or only sons. Their parentage on their father's side
was a little fuzzy. They lived a life of toil and sacrifice for the
good of mankind. They tended to have some association with a trip to
the underworld, either long-term or temporary, followed by a return to
the human world.
We pagans
are in fact very ecumenical. We don't mind so much that the Christians
appropriated our holidays. We do think it would be nice, however, if
we got credit for the basic idea once in a while.
Happy Yule. Blessed Be to you Thieving Christian Bastards. HO HO HO.
