Mark Brant
Mark Brant has been a mover and shaker in politics up there for years. He was a County Commissioner in Monroe County for some period of time. Three four-year terms. He will be moving into his fourth term as soon as he gets out of federal prison.
Brant owned some property up that way. Turns out it was being used as an illegal weed farm and Brant probably sort-of did know about that. Maybe. Depending on who you ask. He did resign his spot on the commission in early October but could not get off the ballot, nor could anybody else get on, in the time period available. He was re-elected by 90% this time around.
He had to pay a $500,000 fine and surrender to the feds about $300,000 in cash found at his home that he could not adequately account for. His elected position pays $15,000 per year.
Brant owns several properties that are customarily rented out for farming. Soybeans, corn and other vegetables primarily. He is not a young man and has been in some aspect of the real estate business for almost 60 years.
He may be out of custody in about one year. His sentence was 18 months.
