RICHMOND -- A business owner who lived in the back of his store shot and killed one of four men trying to burglarize the business early Friday morning and was himself shot and wounded by another burglar, police said.

Three suspects who escaped the scene and helped the mortally wounded burglar to a hospital were later arrested, Richmond police Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said. The 68-year-old property owner's injuries were not considered life-threatening, Abetkov added.

Authorities identified the dead man as 28-year-old Pierre Reddrick Jr. of Richmond, who was pronounced dead after arriving at the hospital.

Police arrested Devonte Lewis, 21 and Terrell Franklin, 27, both from Richmond, and Michael Pitre, 23, from Hercules, at the hospital. They have been charged with attempted murder and burglary..

The chaos unfolded around 1 a.m. outside the building in the 1300 block of Coalinga Avenue, where the wounded man owns a plumbing business with a residence in the back, Abetkov said. According to police, the man's wife heard a noise outside, and her husband grabbed a pistol and investigated.

The property owner startled Reddrick and shot him in the chest, police said. Reddrick then fled over a fence near 13th Street, while one of the three other suspects went back onto the property and shot the owner several times in the legs.

An ambulance took the property owner to Kaiser Permanente in Richmond. He was then airlifted to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.

Police did not determine the circumstances of the shooting until detectives talked to the property owner's wife. The wounded man arrived at the hospital just as officers were arriving at the shooting scene, leaving several questions initially unanswered.

Police were treating the shooting as the fourth homicide of the year in the city.
