NH LEGISLATURE OVERRIDES VETO TO GIVE HEAVE-HO TO THE DEATH PENALTY

by Bob Walsh

The New Hampshire house has moved, by the finest of margins, to dump the state's death penalty, overriding the governor's veto. The issue then moves on to the senate for action.

By a vote of 247 aye and 123 no (damn, they have a large lower house in New Hampshire) , beating the 2/3 requirement by just a nose, the measure will go to the senate where it passed previously by a vote of 17-6.

At least one of the representatives, Susan Ticehurts, pointed out that an ancestor of hers was hanged during the witch trials in 1692 and that she probably wasn't actually a witch. (Maybe she was, you never know. They didn't advertise back then.)

New Hampshire has not executed a prisoner in eighty years and has only one person on death row now, a cop killer who is unquestionably guilty of the crime he was convicted of. The new law might, or might not, effect this case.

The current law allows execution only in seven general cases, the murder of an on-duty law enforcement officer, murder of a judge, murder for hire, murder during the course of a rape or certain drug offenses, home invasion, or a murder committed by a person currently serving LWOP.
