Morehouse College is a very well respected traditionally black college. Their Class of 2019 just graduated, about 400 students in all. The commencement speaker was Robert Smith, a black man and a billionaire.
Mr. Smith announced at the commencement that he was paying off the student loans of the graduating class, a total sum of roughly $40 million. That, boys and girls, shows some serious class and commitment.
Smith is the founder and CEO of Vista Equity Partners, a private equity firm that invests mostly in software and tech companies. He is himself a graduate of Cornell and the Columbia Business School.
Early this year he announced a much more modes gift of $1.5 million for a park on campus, and a scholarship fund.
EDITOR'S NOTE: What a great and generous graduation gift! I doubt that something like this has ever been done before. Robert Smith has set a benchmark for future commencements at the nation's colleges.
