ITS' NOW OFFICIAL. CALIFORNIA THINKS FOREST FIRES MIGHT BE BAD SOME TIMES

by Bob Walsh

On Tuesday the formerly great state of California decided that maybe they should streamline the permit process for three thinning and other forest land cleanup in order to prevent rapidly moving wild fires that caused so much death and destruction in recent years.

After more than ten years of "analysis" the Board of Forestry and Fire Protection approved a vegetation management program for a wide range of material from chaparral to alpine trees.

Under the old rules it took at least three years to get approval for an actual specified "forest management project." It can now be done in less than one year.

They are hoping to process as much as 500,000 acres per year. The state is responsible for about 20 million acres of wild land. The new plan does not cover commercial timber harvesting or new housing construction.
