ON STRIKE, SHUT IT DOWN ..... OR NOT

by Bob Walsh

U. C. Santa Cruz just sacked 54 grad students who were on strike for higher pay, in consideration of the high cost of living there. As part of that strike about 200 TAs refused to turn in fall quarter grades. Most of the grad students and TAs have returned to work, but the 54 did not and have been let go. Over 90% of the grades have been turned in.

The typical student worker gets about $2,400 per month before taxes. The grad students wanted an additional $1,400.

It is a bummer, but in the real world you can't always get what you want.
