The female officer could be heard shouting 'Taser!' several times in the moments before she fired her gun. Immediately after, the female officer can be heard saying: 'I shot him'. It appears she dropped her gun in the aftermath

A 'senior' female police officer who shot dead a 20-year-old black man during a traffic stop in Minneapolis accidentally fired her gun instead of her taser during a struggle, the police chief says.

Daunte Wright, 20, was shot dead on Sunday afternoon in Brooklyn Center after he was pulled over during a traffic stop for what his mother said was air fresheners dangling from his rear-view mirror. He is pictured here with his one-year-old son Daunte Wright Jr.

Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon on Monday described the fatal shooting of Daunte Wright as 'an accidental discharge' after his death sparked violent protests less than 10 miles from where George Floyd was killed last year.

Wright was shot dead on Sunday afternoon after he and his girlfriend were pulled over during a traffic stop for what his mother said was air fresheners dangling from his rear-view mirror, which is illegal in Minnesota.

Gannon revealed during a tense press conference that he believed the officer who shot Wright accidentally drew her handgun instead of a taser. He released police body cam footage of the incident that showed three officers approaching Wright's car after he had been pulled over for the traffic stop.

The footage showed an officer trying to handcuff Wright before he tried to get back in his car and flee. After a struggle broke out, the female officer could be heard shouting 'Taser!' several times in the moments before she fired her gun.

Wright, who Gannon said didn't appear to be armed, managed to drive several blocks before coming to a stop when he hit another car. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

EDITOR'S NOTE: A traffic stop for an air freshener dangling from the rear-view mirror?  If that was really why she stopped the victim, them it must have been a very slow day or she was working under a ticket quota.

It's a little early in the month for ticket quotas. The last week of the month in Texas. That's when the Sgt. addresses productivity. It's still feather legged charge. They put a string on air fresheners so that they can hang from the rearview mirror. What do they do about windshield/dash cams?

I have problems with this, so it does appear that is what happened. Generally speaking you are not in a life or death rush to deploy a Taser. That extra second of thought should allow you to grab the right weapon, especially since the Taser is normally carried on the non-dominant side and neither feels nor looks like your duty weapon. Sounds to me like a training issue combined with an honest whoops. Some years ago the same thing happened to a cop (also female) in the Fresno area. She ended up being able to keep her job as recall. Some sort of misdemeanor negligent homicide charge.
