SANDWICH SHOP CLERK FIRED FOR RESISTING ARMED ROBBER

by Bob Walsh

About seven days ago Araceli Sotelo was working in a Subway Sandwich Shop in Rockford, Illinois by herself when a man came in, flashed a pistol and told her to give him the money or he would hurt her.

As the robbery commenced (footage is available on line) she got him in a choke hold, hit him, backed him towards the door and kicked the gun out of his hand.  She then picked up the gun and beat him with it.  This was after he grabbed her purse.

Neither Subway corporate nor the franchise owner have responded to media inquiries about the incident or the firing, which they are calling a "suspension without pay."

A Go Fund Me page has been started for Ms. Sotelo to pay her legal expenses and cover her lost wages.  Presumably she is going to sue Subway.  If she had been in CA she would have been prosecuted for unlawful possession of the weapon she picked up and for beating the robber with it.  Then the state would assist the robber in suing her for damages.

I worked with a cop who took down a robbery in progress at a convenience store. The store area manager gave the cop a new Colt Python for his bravery. I also arrived on the scene of a robbery where the Blackbelted clerk kicked the robbers ass and was later fired. It appears that anyone but the employee can stop a robbery. Does that make sense?
