Laurie Smith has been with the Santa Clara (CA) Sheriff's
Office since 1973. She has been the sheriff since 1998. She has been
accused by the grand jury of selling gun permits, being less than
transparent regarding gifts and willful misconduct. She is currently
undergoing a civil trial for corruption. (Santa Clara County
collectively HATES guns and HATES gun permits.)
She just decided to retire.
The
current undersheriff, Ken Binder, will run the department for the
nonce. A new sheriff will be elected next week. The choice is between a
retired SCSO captain, Kevin Jensen, and Robert Jonsen, the retired
chief of Palo Alto. It is likely that who ever wins will be appointed
by the county board of supervisors to take over pretty much
immediately. Sheriff Smith had previously decided not to run for
reelection.
