Tensions between Israel and the Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah escalated again Sunday morning as an apparent rocket barrage was fired from Lebanon toward the Haifa bay area. No casualties were reported in that region, although shortly afterward rockets struck on the Golan Heights, in the area of the largest Jewish town, Katzrin.
The attack came after a weekend of rising hostilities. On Saturday, the Israeli Air Force struck multiple Hezbollah sites in Lebanon in response to an anti-aircraft missile launched by the group downing an Israeli drone over Lebanese airspace. The first rockets from Lebanon began slamming into northern Israel around 8 a.m. Sunday, as children were being bused to schools in towns and communities along the border area. Harrowing footage captured the sounds of air raid sirens sending schoolchildren running for cover as their bus arrived in the kibbutz of Kfar Blum.
As Israeli communities huddled in shelters through the morning, with many alerts sending residents into bomb shelters in the Kiryat Shmona area and other border towns in the north.
Arabic TV channel Sky News reported overnight strikes by Israel targeting Hezbollah missile storage facilities and training centers in the Baalbek area of Lebanon's Bekaa Valley. Hezbollah claimed responsibility for firing missiles toward "Israeli bases" in the Golan Heights region, according to statements from the militant group.
The flare-up came amid heightened tensions along Israel's frontiers, with Israeli forces also striking multiple targets in the Gaza Strip overnight in response to terrorist rocket fire. The Israeli military said strikes had hit terrorist targets across Gaza, including eastern and southern neighborhoods of Rafah city, Deir al-Balah, and southern Gaza City, with naval missile launches toward northern Gaza targets.
