Friday night a Jacksonville FL cop did a traffic stop at
27th and Main near sundown. No big deal. Driver told the cop he was
carrying. No big deal. It is Florida after all. The cop wanted to
take custody of the weapon until after the business of the traffic stop
was done. I don't know how common or uncommon that is but again no big
deal. EXCEPT. The cop wanted to retrieve the gun herself rather than
let the driver do it. In the process of removing the gun from the
driver the cop discharged the weapon, shooting the driver in the leg.
The
news article I read about this said both that the cop took the gun from
the driver's waistband and that the cop took the gun in it's holster
from the driver's waistband. Not likely that both are correct.
Interestingly
enough this is NOT considered to be a Deputy Involved Shooting but
rather the accidental injury to a person in custody of the S.O.
It
is unknown if they decided to ticket the driver for the red light
violation. It would be really chickenshit to do so, but......
So far the S.O. has declined to identify any of the people involved.
