A group of 16 cross-country skiers got caught in an
avalanche a couple of days ago in the Sierra Nevada near Frog Lake. The
group included 4 professional guides. Nine are still missing. It has
been difficult to get rescuers to them without the risk of triggering
more avalanche activity.
Maybe
it is just me and I am too old and careful. I am not sure I would have
gone out in an area like that during what was known to be a major
oncoming storm. In my limited experience with cross-country skiing it
is engaged in primarily by fitness junkies and sight-seers and not
adrenaline freaks. Any trip into the wilderness has some risk attached
to it. That being said had I been in a situation where I was
considering such an excursion I would not have engaged in it with that
storm coming in just from a personal safety prospective.
They were a good size group. Professional guides. Good communications and emergency alarms. But still......
