BAIL REFORM AND SENTENCING REFORM ABOUT TO PASS IN CA

by Bob Walsh

The formerly great state of California is about to shitcan traditional bail in favor of a state-run bureau that may employ many of the about to be unemployed bail agents.

Under the new plan, which Moonbeam said he will sign, virtually all misdemeanor arrests will be kicked the same day on notice to appear tickets. Theoretically most felons and violent misdemeanents will have other arrangements made, by a risk assessment panel of civil servants.

The current system works and costs the state nothing, but is not particularly fair to people at the low end of the socio-economic spectrum. The "new" system will, IMHO, be a get out of jail free car for repeat petty criminals. If you think auto burglary is bad now wait until it becomes impossible to hold them in custody.

CA is also working on what is being called 'sentencing reform" which will end up letting a LOT of criminals, especially those in over-represented groups (I. e. non-whites)out of prison early in the interest of "fairness." I wonder how that is going to work out. (Actually I don't wonder at all.)
