EX-CORRECTIONS CHIEF JAILED PENDING SENTENCING

By Bob Walsh

A federal judge has revoked the bail of the former head of the Mississippi prison system and sent him to the slammer pending his final sentencing. It seems that this triggering incident was the man allegedly stealing lighting from a home the feds had confiscated.

Christopher Epps copped a plea over 20 months ago to money laundering and filing false tax returns for neglecting to pay taxes on his bribe income. He had been free on bail pending sentencing in May of next year (damn, the wheels turn slowly, don’t they?) when he was arrested for the burglary of a home he formerly owned that the feds seized. He is said to have stolen an electrical controller and outdoor lighting worth somewhat less than $1,000. The judge was not amused.

He is facing up to 23 years in federal prison and the loss of over $1.5 million in assets. He could get 25 years state time for the burglary.

The judge also ordered the probation department to determine how Epps came to have $5,000 in cash-money in his home. He draws a state pension and his spouse is still working as a nurse.

$5000 is nothing. A good nurse makes $8000 to $9000 a month especially in CA.
