Regular readers will recall that I have opined a time or two about the very active referendum action in the People's Republic of California. It does however have a kink or two. The ballot DESCRIPTION, which is often the only thing voters read, is authored by the Attorney General, who is a constitutional officer in a partisan office. This has occasionally led to blatantly misleading descriptions designed specifically to push voters in one direction or the other.
Enter Sacramento County Judge Timothy Frawley. On Friday he said that the description authored by the A. G., Xavier Becerra, a hard-core socialist-Democrap, was misleading and would mislead voters. The A. G.'s description focuses on the loss of transportation funding and does not focus on the repeal of a very unpopular tax increase, which is the ACTUAL focus of the ballot initiative.
The title and summary will appear both on the petitions to get the item on the ballot and on the ballot itself assuming enough signatures are gathered to do the job. The Republicans in the People's Republic of California hold considerable hope for this initiative. Even if it doesn't pass (and it probably would as the tax is immensely unpopular) it will have a strong tendency to drive conservative traffic to the ballot box in 2018. The Republicans want very much to break up the Democrap super-majority currently in both houses of the legislature.
IN any event the judge is going to write the title and description himself. Way to go dude.
