MAJOR NEWS FLASH: MORE STAFF MAKES FOR SAFER JAILS

by Bob Walsh

In a flash of incredible insight the Logan County, Ohio, auditor has determined that cutting back the staff of the county jail was probably not the best idea with regards to safety.

The jail is rated for 140 prisoners but holds only about 75 right now. It was staffed by three correctional officers per shift.

Due to drug problems in the area the jail has had its population increase to close to capacity. This means they need five or six deputies per shift, at overtime. Unfortunately the county commissioners have refused to increase the budget, which means the sheriff's office has become essentially a reactive force in the community rather than a proactive one.
