Julian Assange, warrior for information freedom and cat lover, was nailed for 50 weeks as a guest of Her Majesty for jumping bail. He is wanted in Sweden on sexual assault aliegations. The judge said that him hiding out in the Ecuador embassy cost the Brits 21 million over the seven years he was there. I admit I don't understand that, unless that is the personnel cost involved in keeping an eye on the embassy to make sure he didn't beat feet.
The judge was not impressed by his apology, noting that he had voluntarily absented himself from the court's jurisdiction and did not surrender, but had to be physically dragged out of the embassy. Plus he is a cat lover, so he has nothing coming anyway.
My understanding is that Her Majesty's prisons are not anywhere near as nice as most American ones. I'm sure Julian will let us know.

I'll bet Assange has a bit of money. I always saw that extra commissary items being given to the folks that don't like you goes a long way towards keeping a beat down from happening.
