The Trump administration announced on Thursday that it has shitcanned a $929 million contract funding a chunk of Jerry's toy train, otherwise jokingly referred to as High-Speed Rail.
Much of the reason was the fact that California has "abandoned the vision" which was essential to the Federal Railway Administration grant in the first place.
Governor Newsom of course screamed like a mashed cat, asserting that the action was illegal and that Trump is a nasty person. He claims that they money belongs to CA and they will go to court to get it if needs be.
In the meantime the FRA is looking to get back $2.5 billion they they already gave the state under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which the formerly great state of California has over-promised and under-delivered on.
Newsom still at least pretends he wants to build a chunk of the project, between Bakersfield and Merced, mostly in order to not have to pay back the federal money and maybe keep a few union construction jobs.
Isn't strange how if you keep calling somebody an ignorant asshole he eventually decides there is no point in giving you money?

Trump knows that money is gone, but he isn't throwing good money after bad in California.
While I do agree with your analysis with regard to the Newsom/Brown relationship with our president Bob, the fact remains that this was a really really really stupid project. From the get go.
Had they been able to deliver the promised performance at the original cost I would have thought it was a maybe-worthwhile project. They didn't, in large part because they couldn't. The project NEVER had a change of delivering what they promised to deliver at the cost they promised to deliver it at. It was a hoax from beginning to what is now hopefully the end.
