SAC UNIFIED GOING WITH LAYOFFS....OF TEACHERS

by Bob Walsh

The Sacramento Unified School District is in serious financial trouble. It was made worse recently when an arbitration went against the district, costing them from $7 to $14 million, for raises due to staff that were not paid. This is pushing the district even further into peril. They seem likely to run out of liquid capital around the end of October and will very possibly (likely IMHO) be taken over by the state.

Their response yesterday to the situation was to announce the layoff of 178 credentialed teachers. The district was quick to point out that all of these layoffs were not necessarily actual classroom teachers and that some of them could maybe possibly be suits who just happened to have teaching credentials.

Heaven forbid that any actual suits may lose their jobs. Somebody's wife, girlfriend or son-in-law may find themselves having to get a real job.
