ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

by Bob Walsh

The Indonesian island volcano Krakatoa exploded in 1883. The explosion was heard 3,000 miles away and generated a seismic sea wave that was measured in the English Channel. They think more than 35,000 people were killed, mostly by the wave. About half of the mass of the island was thrown into the atmosphere, producing noticeable changes in the weather around the world for about three years.
