CA MAY ROLL BACK STUPIDITY JUST A LITTLE BIT

by Bob Walsh

The legislature of the formerly great state of California MAY roll back a bit of legislative stupidity in face of a huge uptick in car burglaries, which are essentially treated as traffic tickets in CA.

The state will soon be considering legislation that would make it a felony to steal i-pads, i-phones, lap tops and similar electronic devices due to the considerable amount of personal data these devices have on them. This lays the (former) owner open to all sorts of electronic fraud, identity theft, etc.

The city and count of San Francisco is at least sort-of considering paying auto burglary victims for the glass damage. They still won't prosecute the thieves, but at least you won't have to pay for your own side window.

Is the law being written for the value of the device or simply personal data? Either way it's step in the right direction.

Still in the works, but the info I got indicated the devices were the focus. That keeps the info out of the trial record.
