The formerly great state of California is acting to move volunteer condemned prisoners into general population housing in various prisons around the state.
The death penalty is still on the books in CA and four years back voters acted to streamline and speed up executions. However, since the Governor is absolutely convinced that voters are ignorant assholes, he has placed all executions on hold in CA. That state has not scragged anyone officially in 15 years. The state has physically dismantled the old gas chamber, which, believe it or not, can not be rebuilt and used due to air pollution laws. It vented to the open air and killed flying rats when it was used.
The prisoners will be able to move to other prisons that have electrified fences. Condemned female prisoners have to stay at CWF Chowchilla but they will be able to move into GP housing.
The move is voluntary for the prisoners and it is unclear how many will volunteer. I have little personal experience with condemned prisoners. I suspect many will stay where they are to avoid the drama in GP housing, but I could easily be wrong.
There are somewhat over 700 death row prisoners in the formerly great state of Californai.
