The
New York P D is acting to assign police captains to actually patrol
personally IN the subway system in an effort to make a dent in soaring
violence in the subways. Two chiefs per shift, three shifts per day. A
strict reading of the policy includes a total of 110 people, from
deputy chiefs to department chiefs. Assuming the policy is actually
enforced these people will be required to actually ride the trains for
the duration of their eight hour shift. These are not new job positions
but positions that will be covered by existing personnel.
As one might expect the Captain's Endowment Association, the union that represents NYPD chiefs, doesn't think much of the idea.
There
is also the fact that the current state law and policies of the
District Attorney will make a HUGE amount of difference as to the
effectiveness or any anti-crime policy.
