To Italian-Americans in New York and other parts of this country, Christopher Columbus is a worshiped hero, not to be besmirched by anyone.

Columbus was an explorer who thought the earth was round when almost everyone else believed the earth was flat. He believed it was possible to reach India and its riches by crossing the ocean.

On August 3, 1492, Columbus and his crew set sail from Palos,Spain in three small ships: the Niña, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. On October 12, after a hazardous journey and threats of mutiny, Columbus and his men made landfall on San Salvador Island, believing they had reached the East Indies.

Although Columbus never even come close to reaching India, his amazing feat is akin to our astronauts landing on the moon.  His discovery led to the exploration and conquest of Latin America by the Portuguse and Spaniards.

The radical Left has accused Columbus of mistreating and enslaving the Indians. That, for the most part, is pure Left Wing hogwash. It was the explorers that followed Columbus who did that.

Nevertheless, the false accusation led to the defacing, toppling and destruction of Columbus statues like was done to the statues of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson Robert E. Lee and other slave holders. The woke idiots also demanded the abolishment of Columbus Day and insisting it be replaced by Indigenous Peoples Day.

Columbus deserves better than that ... in fact, much better!

All Americans, not just Italian-Americans, should demand there be an official celebration of Columbus Day. If anyone wants to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day, let them find another day of the year.

Columbus was a true hero who deserves to be celebrated. Damn those who would defame him!

Columbus was a man of his time. Judging him (or anybody else) by modern standards is unreasonable and unfair. He had an idea. He sought out and got political and financial backing. He made it happen. He opened up a large chunk of the planet for what could be called westernized exploitation. Somebody else would have done it later if he hadn't.

By the way, Disney is now doing a production of a Native American going back in time to murder Columbus before he can make his voyage and thereby "save" somebody or other from something or other. Should be a very instructive piece of woke revisionism.
