SCOTUS vacated a lower court decision upholding the requirement to have
a special permit from the state to purchase or possess a handgun. The
U. S. District Court of Massachusetts in Morin v. Lyver decided that
this was a completely kosher thing to do. The decision also included a
lifetime ban on purchasing a handgun if ever convicted of a nonviolent
misdemeanor involving the possession or use of a gun, such as violation
of safe storage and transport laws.
The SCOTUS ruling turned the case back to the First Circuit Court of Appeals for a re-do.
The SCOTUS ruling was unsigned and had no dissents on the record.
