The legislature of the formerly great state of California
has created a special legislative committee to "deal with" the epidemic
of organized retail theft. This was essentially caused by the fact
that the voters of the state are gullible and ignorant and voted to move
the goal posts. You can now steal up to $950 worth of stuff and you
can not be taken into custody in most circumstances. You get a ticket
and have to appear in court at some time in the future, maybe, if you
feel like it. This has results in literally mobs of people descending
on high end retail stores like a swarm of locust and stealing everything
that isn't nailed down. Even if a few of them do get caught it is a
bullshit misdemeanor.
This
has actually caused stores to closed. Not only mom-and-pop stores of
locations of major chain retailers, like Target and Walgreens and CVS.
The problem is resulting in retail deserts in the same way that there
are food deserts in some urban areas. Places where you have to travel
significantly just to buy food, especially fresh food and meat. If you
want a bag of chips and a single beer, no problem there.
