Cow elk can becoming dangerous during calving season.
Estes Park is apparently a nice relatively wild area near
Denver, CO. An 8-year old girl was riding her bike in the park two
days ago when she attracted the attention of a cow elk. (It is calving
season right now for elk.)
In
any event the elk attacked the girl, knocked her off her bike and
stomped her repeatedly. The girl got a trip to the E.R. for her
trouble, but was released the same day.
Fish
and Wildlife responded to the area and shot the elk with a beanbag
round after she became aggressive in an effort to dissipate the
aggressive behavior. They came back the next day and snagged up the
calf and took it away. I am guessing they hope that taking the calf
with quit the mother down.
They
call them wild animals for a reason and they do not necessarily think
that 8-year old girls on bicycles or little old ladies walking their
Yorkie on a leash are not threats.
