The mayor, city council and voters of Hunting Beach, CA.
are overwhelmingly in favor of requiring identification to vote in their
city.  Gavin Newsom, the God-Emperor of the formerly great state of
California, hates the idea.  He hates it so much he ramrodded as new law
thru the (Democrat-Socialist super majority) legislature to outlaw the
practice.
There are two
sorts of cities in California. One is a general law city.  The other is a
charter city.  They are functionally different.  Huntington Beach is a
charter city.  The operations of the city are governed by their charter
rather than state law, at least to a large extent.  The city is, so far,
telling the governor to take his law and shove it up his ass.
The
law in question was instituted by the governor signing SB1174 into law
five days ago.  It requires voters show ID to vote.  This was required
by Measure A passed by the voters, to be effective in 2026.  The state
has already sued to overturn the local ordinance.  The first hearing is
due on October 10 in Orange County Superior Court.
In
a somewhat related situation the state also passed AB1825, the Freedom
to Read, act into law.  It was also passed in direct "retaliation" to an
act by Huntington Beach.  This is because Gavin is pissed that the city
set up a commission to set up a not-yet formed parent-guardian review
board which would "screen" children's books before they are placed on
the shelves in the local library.  SB1174 would prohibit local library
boards from refusing to shelve books that had certain types of content
that the boards may find to be offensive or inappropriate.
