The original crime happened earlier in November in
Connecticut. The cops had reason to believe that Lance Benuet Morales,
25, had shot up the vehicle in which the two were traveling back on
November 19. A third, unnamed individual was injured but not killed.
The shooting is not believed to have been random.
The
cops started looking for Morales pretty promptly and he was arrested in
Puerto Rico by the U. S. Marshalls. The shooting was believed to have
been a "personal dispute" between Morales and the dead woman, Jessiah
Mercado. It was a car to car shooting and it is not known, or at least
not said, whether or not the child was collateral damage or also a
target. Morales is awaiting extradition. Once he gets back to CT he
will be in need of a $3 million bond to get out.
