PROSEUCTOR AND PROBATION DEPT. AT ODDS OVER SENTENCING RECOMMENDATION FOR CONGRESSMAN’S FATHER

By Bob Walsh

Congressman Ami Bera’s dad is a criminal. Babula Bera, 83, father of the Elk Grove (CA) Democrat, pleaded guilty to election fraud a couple of months back related to his son’s 2010 and 2012 congressional campaigns. Essentially he recruited friends and family members to funnel money into his campaign to get around election law that has a maximum for such donations. Both Congressman Bera and his father deny the congressman had any knowledge of this chicanery.

The federal probation people have recommended zero time in custody for daddy Bera. The prosecution objected on the record yesterday. The max he could get is five years in custody on each of the two counts he copped to.

The prosecution has recommended no more than 2 ½ years in custody. The guidelines call for between 46 months and 57 months in custody.

Actual sentencing is scheduled for August 18..
