William Sturevant, 46, owns a currently vacant home in Whitehall Township, PA. It has been broken into more than once. On Saturday he called 911 and told them he believed a burglary was in progress at the location. Two cops entered thru an open basement door, and as they ascended the steps onto the ground floor Sturevant opened fire, hitting one of the officers in the leg.
It seems that nobody thinks he was deliberately trying to hurt cops, he was just an idiot with a gun. He is being prosecuted for aggravated assault (which may not stick) and reckless endangerment (which almost certainly will). I shouldn't be surprised if he has some civil exposure as well, if nothing else to the township's Workers Comp carrier.
