I have been a fan of the .380 cartridge for quite some time, but not so much the guns. I have a few classic .380s but they typically have crappy sights, indifferent triggers and are hard to get functional magazines for. A while back I bought a Ruger LCP which is functionally fine and, as a current production gun easy to get stuff for. It even came with a laser sight at a very reasonable price. That being said I could never get real fond of the trigger.
I recently bought a SIG 238 HD (heavy duty) in .380 and must say I am very fond of it. It has a steel frame so it should take pretty much anything the cartridge is capable of handing out, and the 7+1 magazine capacity is adequate. It is relatively small but not so small that I can't grip it well, at least with the +1 magazines. The sights are excellent and the single-action trigger is quite good. I have now put about 650 rounds of pretty much every description thru it without a hitch.
For many years the .380 was disparaged, at least in this country, as being sub-marginal for a serious SD gun. Modern bullet design and better propellants have, IMHO, pushed it into the adequate category. It is still actually a tad more expensive to shoot than a 9mm unless you roll your own (I do) but if you are looking for a very good quality pocket pistol in a decent caliber this one is worth looking at.
