The Sacramento Unified teacher's union has called on the state school superintendent to appoint a committee to "help them" avert the strike they have planned soon, which could very well force the district into state receivership (which would likely have a serious impact on their contract). The district must identify and enact $35 million in cuts in the next few weeks or they are likely to be taken over.
Darrell Steinberg, the professional politician who is currently the mayor of Sacramento, brokered the current labor deal between the district and the union. He was NOT asked to sit on the committee. The teachers union has its second one-day strike set for May 22.
The teachers association has said that "if all reasonable alternatives have been exhausted, then SCTA would CONSIDER reopening our contract to avoid state takeover." I guess is depends on what you think reasonable is.
