LeRonne Armstrong, until
recently the Chief of the Oakland CA Police Department, has announced
his plans to appeal his firing. Oakland Mayor, Sheng Thao, fired him
for allegedly mishandling internal investigations into police
misconduct. The administrative appeal is required before a more formal
appeal can be made thru the courts.
Armstrong was born and raised in Oakland and has come up thru the ranks of the department.
One
of the two internal investigations was of a Sergeant and an Officer who
were alleged to have been involved in a hit-and-run accident in San
Francisco. In the second case the same sergeant is alleged to have
fired his service weapon in an elevator at department headquarters. In
both cases Chief Armstrong is alleged to have closed the investigations
without action without bothering to actually review the evidence in the
case. If true this is a violation of department rules for internal
affairs investigations.
