LeRonne Armstrong was, until a couple of days ago, the
Chief of Police in Oakland, CA. He had come up thru the ranks and a lot
of the locals liked him. He was just handed his walking papers on
Wednesday by Mayor Sheng Thao. He is not happy.
The
official reason (and maybe the real reason) he was sacked was for
slow-dragging an internal investigation. In addition two Lieutenants
are on administrative leave for allegedly mishandling the investigations
in question. Chief Armstrong has been on administrative leave for a
month.
There is a federal
monitor (fun fun fun) overseeing the Oakland P.D. That monitor
expressed some unhappiness in the handling of the internal investigation
of a Sergeant. The Chief adamantly denies any wrongdoing in the
matter.
A great many
community leaders and religious figures are supporting the Chief, who
has been with the O.P.D. for 24 years. He is currently "evaluating his
legal options" but has said flatly that his termination was
unjustified.
