By a vote of 6-5 the San Francisco Board of Supervisors
decided to put on the ballot a proposition that would, if approved, set
minimum staffing levels fo the SFPD and probably-maybe set up funding
for recruitment and retention.
Right
now SF has a recommended staffing level of 2,382 cops and would like
to hire another 400 if they can get them. There is a certain amount of
back and forth right now about how to fund more cops. Some want it tied
directly to new taxes. Others say that is not necessary to get what
they need.
SF right now
has more cops per capita than many cities. Right now they have 26.4
officers per 10,000 residents. Indianapolis, Charlotte and St. Paul all
have less than 20. That being said San Francisco's daytime population
increase (tourists and commuters) is significantly higher than the
comparable cities.
In any
event the people will decide.. Maybe. Stockton has a similar
requirement but they are always behind the curve due to hiring and
retention issues.
