HONG KONG HIGH-RISE FIRES

By Bob Walsh

Thick smoke and flames rise as a major fire engulfs several apartment blocks at Wang Fuk Court

The Wang Fuk building complex, consisting of several high-rise structures, was undergoing a major renovation when a fire started on the bamboo scaffolding outside of the buildings.  Bamboo is still commonly used as a scaffolding material in the far east but is flammable and can act as a conduit for fire.  The fire jumped from building to building in the eight-building complex three days ago.

At least 128 people are known dead, 67 are injured and several hundred still not accounted for.  Several thousand people lived in the complex.

Right now 11 people are under arrest, being charged with manslaughter.  They take the concept of civic responsibility very seriously over there, or at least they used to before the ChiCOMS took over.
