Substitute teacher invited students to smoke pot

SOMERSWORTH, New Hampshire -- Police arrested a former Somersworth Middle School substitute teacher Thursday alleging that she provided a Vape smoking device to a middle school student, and allegations that she invited other middle school students to smoke marijuana -- all while she was still employed as a teacher.

Elisha Mahar, 20, of 37 Gooseberry Circle, Rochester, was charged with four counts of endangering the welfare of a child. Somersworth Police arrested Mahar at 2:15 p.m. on the Class A misdemeanors.

According to police, school officials reported the allegations against Mahar to the school resource officer on Oct. 13. The case was then investigated by the school resource officer and the detective division of the Somersworth Police Department.

The case involves allegations that Mahar provided a Vape smoking device to a middle school student and allegations that she invited middle school students to smoke marijuana, police said. The incidents occurred during a time when Mahar was still employed as a substitute teacher, police added.

According to Interim Superintendent Connie Brown, the number one priority for the Somersworth School District is keeping our students safe.

Mahar was processed on the arrest warrant, and released on $5,000 personal recognizance bail with a court date of Tuesday, Dec. 26 at noon at the 7th Circuit Court/Dover Division, police said.
