A bizarre story began unfolding on Wednesday when Israeli soldiers manning a position south of the Etzion Bloc of Jewish settlements in Judea noticed a family of Palestinians get out of their car and bury something next to the military post.
After the Palestinians left, the soldiers investigated and found two bags buried, one of which contained the corpse of a one-day-old baby girl.
A hunt for the vehicle was immediately launched. According to an official IDF statement, it was found a short time later and soldiers demanded the Palestinians halt and exit the vehicle for questioning. When they failed to do so, the soldiers shot at the car’s tires.
Unofficial reports suggested that the Palestinian vehicle in question approached the soldiers in a menacing way, possibly in an attempt to ram them, prompting the Israelis to open fire. Palestinian sources claim that resulted in the death of a young boy in the car, and left his father, who was driving, moderately wounded.
As for the dead baby girl, details are still fuzzy.
The official Palestinian news agency WAFA charges that the newborn was originally buried in her nearby hometown of Beit Ummar, and that for unspecified reasons Israeli soldiers exhumed the body and left it lying on the ground. Such wild allegations are nothing new for the Palestinian media, and are almost never backed up with solid evidence.
Meanwhile, the IDF has opened an investigation into the reported death of the young boy, and whether or not the soldiers involved acted in a responsible manner.
