Gavin
Newsom has just announced that large-scale organized retail theft is
probably a bad thing and he intends to crack down on it. However, with
the current California law which essentially decriminalizes shoplifting
with a value of under $950 and the LA and SF DAs refusing to prosecute
even repeat shoplifters anyway, his moral outrage is simply so much
horseshit.
Both London
Breed, the SF mayor, and Bill Scott, the SF PD Chief, have decried the
viral videos of massive shoplifting by organized groups carried on in
broad daylight with impunity. They complain these videos crate a
"perception of lawlessness" (thereby implying the perception is false)
and assert that crime is actually down in SF.
The
God-Emperor made much noise about a new law which allows the California
Highway Patrol to operate task groups to fight organized retail theft.
He didn't explain how this would change the existing state law and how
it would compel liberal DAs to prosecute the cases. Probably because it
does not and can not.
