It
seems that 54 current and former CHP officers are believed to have
padded their overtime enough that they have attracted a criminal
investigation. This all occurred in the L. A. area. The eleven
officers still serving are on administrative leave.
Really
dumb doing this sort of stuff, especially doing it big enough that it
stands out and you get caught. They probably got ratted out by somebody
who figured it out and got pissed. Or maybe somebody did enough cross
checking to spot it. In any event they will be lucky if all they have
to do is pay it back.

This used to be a well-known scheme in law enforcement. Most of the time, officers would schedule an extra job knowing they would also be on the governments clock. I think it would be pretty hard to pull off today.
I knew of a fellow who drove transports for CDC. He used to check the CalTrans closed road reports every day and deliberately take roads that he knew or strongly suspected would have delays due to road work. Made a ton of overtime. Of course, he actually did put in the time.
